New hotel concept launches for university, hospital communities

California developer A.F. Canta has launched University Hotels, a hospitality concept designed specifically to serve the needs of university and hospital communities.

The announcement for the new concept—which will be co-managed by Reliance Hospitality—was made during the Boutique Hotel Investment Conference in New York. The concept is designed to blend the refined experience of a boutique luxury hotel with the exclusive atmosphere of a private club focused on health and wellness, Aileen Canta, founder & CEO of A.F. Canta, said at the conference.

Canta is currently in discussions with several institutions and expects its first flagship property to open with the Club in fall 2025, with the hotel to follow in late spring 2026.

Launching a Brand

“Launching University Hotels in New York is a dream come true—and even more meaningful as it falls on my late father's birthday,” Canta said in a statement.

“University Hotels is a unique concept that will revitalize the academic hospitality experience,” said Bryan Fish, CEO of Reliance Hospitality. “Bringing a luxury hospitality experience to university campuses through University Hotels is about more than elevated accommodations—it’s about creating a vibrant hub where innovation, comfort and community intersect.”

University Hotels are designed to offer a distinctive blend of private club intimacy and boutique hotel charm. With floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, inviting lounges and layered interiors, the spaces are designed to evoke the comfort of a well-lived residence, according to the company.

Designed in-house and customized to reflect the unique character of each location, the concept is structured as a joint venture. Universities and hospitals are invited to contribute real estate assets in exchange for equity in the venture.

Some of the features of the hotels include accommodations for visiting scholars, alumni, medical guests and dignitaries, as well, according to the company. An exclusive private club is designed to provide tailored benefits to faculty, clinicians, students and select community members.
